Diabetes Management

Diabetes affects people in different ways. Rehabilitation can help those diagnosed with diabetes by delivering a personalized plan that helps them manage the symptoms and side effects. Treatment may include:

  • Teaching patients to maintain a healthy diet, possibly reducing medications needed
  • Managing medications so patients can still lead an active lifestyle
  • Developing a simple exercise plan
  • Educating the patient and family on diabetes risks

What are the different types of diabetes?

There are basically three types of diabetes:

  • Type I Diabetes – Commonly known as juvenile diabetes, it occurs when the body does not produce insulin. According the American Diabetes Association only five percent to ten percent of people with diabetes have type I. It is easily managed with insulin therapy.
  • Type II Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes– This is the more common type of diabetes and occurs when either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body ignores the insulin. Gestational Diabetes occurs when pregnant women have problems with blood glucose levels, usually around 28 weeks or later. It doesn’t mean they had diabetes before pregnancy, or will have it after pregnancy. It is just something to watch and discuss with a doctor.
